Q: What do you charge for a commissioned painting?
A: The cost for commissioning a painting can vary widely depending on the complexity of the subject matter and the size of the painting. Call me and let's have a conversation about your ideas. I can send you more detailed information once I know what you have in mind.
Q: What do you charge for a mural?
A: I charge by the square foot based on size and level of detail.
My minimum for any mural is $560. Price per square foot (width times height) goes up for more detailed and down for more square feet.
Example: A very simple 5ft by 8ft mural (40 square feet) would be priced at $14 per square feet for a total of $560. Anything smaller is still $560. I charge this minimum because it takes a lot of time to negotiate, prepare, set up, and clean up no matter the size. If this same sized mural were very complex, such as highly detailed animals, people, or buildings, precision lettering, etc, then the price would be $24 per square foot, or $960. Very large murals, such as whole rooms, are charged a lower price per square foot. The best way to get an accurate quote is to call and discuss your project with me. The consultation is free.
Q: How long does it take to paint a mural.
A: Most small to medium sized murals take between 1-3 days to complete. A whole room might take 3-6 days depending on how detailed. The largest mural I've done so far was a massive 3,200 square feet (two 90ft long hall walls and a huge stairwell, plus the design and making of two very large hanging signs and several small ones. The whole project took two and a half months working with two assistants to complete.
Q: Can you paint anything?
A: Yes and no.
Yes, most of the time. Clients often do ask for things they do not see on my website, which is why you see such a variety of styles and color schemes. My intuitive painting skills are strong enough to support the new or different. I am often willing to take the time to learn a process (at my own expense) in order to accommodate a client. This was how I learned faux finishing. And I will be completely honest with myself and with you about whether I can do what you're asking for.
No. I cannot recreate someone else's artwork without their permission. It's plagiarism. Even if there is no copyright notice posted on Pinterest, for example, the work should still be considered that person's intellectual property. Disney, for example, can and has sued other artists for that. Artists who do that are taking a huge risk. However, your logo painted in your office building is ok.
And keep in mind that my work is always family friendly.
Q: Do you travel outside Michigan to paint murals? If so, how does this affect the price?
A: Yes, I often travel outside Michigan. Anything within 100 miles of the Detroit area does not incur a travel cost, even if it's out of state. Since much of my equipment and supplies are prohibited on a plane, I almost always drive. For anything beyond 100 miles, I charge $0.55 per mile. This covers food and fuel. Hotel/motel are charged per night at current cost/availability. I generally choose moderately priced hotels/motels within 5 miles of the work site. Hotel costs are waived for clients who allow me to stay in their guest room, assuming they and I feel comfortable doing so. All travel costs are researched and agreed upon in writing beforehand so there should be no surprises.
